Practical Ideas for Horse Owners

Bony nag, pen drawing

Ferdinand Weyrer, the father of the mother of my mother,
made this drawing of a not very well-fed nag around 1865.

The perfect bathtub plug

Bathtub plug

An old bathtub used as a water container for horses can be made perfectly and safely watertight as follows.

Go to a metal merchant and get 2 aluminum slices 4 inches diameter and with a thickness of approx. 1/5 inch. Make a hole in the center of each slice and buy a stainless steel bolt. Get an old inner tube from a garage and cut out 2 pieces of approx. 6 x 6 inches each. Fix the lices with the rubber as packaging meterial on both sides of the bath tup outlet and fix tightly with the bolt.

This solution is perfectly watertight for years, non-poisonous, non-corroding and can be moved on to the next bathtub once the first one has subsided under corrosion. Total cost: approx. USD 12.

Effortless manure removal

Pushcart with 2 wheels

For horse owners with weak wrists or a bad spine who have to push heavy carts, there is a simple and cheap solution. Buy a spare wheel on a plastic hub and ask a blacksmith to make the construction as seen on the photograph. The axle is approx. 12 cm nearer to the person. The white arrow points to the original axle position.

The main weight of the manure now will rest on the twoo wheels instead of pulling on your hands. Even a full cart can be moved with one hand if necessary. The extra weigh from the second wheel is negligible. Manoeverability is hardly restricted. The contruction is not very suitable on hills or on uneven ground. Total cost: less than USD 50.

Coupling mirror

Coupling mirror

A rear mirror from the scrapyard - mounted at the driver's eye level - comes in handy when you have no helper whilst coupling your trailer

Fast trailer jack

Fast trailer jack

Your car's jack will be to short for a horse trailer in many cases. A self-made wooden block with a gently sloping ramp and a hollow wheel rest comes in handy - the trailer is up in seconds.
