White and red flashing light from a mobile phone for pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders

Ever been walking, cycling, riding in the dark without proper safety lighting? That's not a problem anymore, 2 tiny video clips in your mobile will give you hours of flashing light - red to the rear or white to the front.

How?

Use any graphic PC program to produce 3 images in the maximum screen size (pixels) of your mobile, each in another colour (white, black and red) and save them as white.jpg, black.jpg and red.jpg respectively.

By using a suitable utility - e.g the freeware UnFREEz, see www.snapfiles.com/Freeware/gmm/fwani.html - you produce 2 animated GIFs from these 3 images.

Each animated GIF consists of only 2 images of 0.50 seconds each:
  • for the white flashing light 1 image black (black.jpg) + 1 image white (white.jpg), the filename will e.g. be flash-white.gif
  • for the red flashing light 1 image black (black.jpg) + 1 image red (red.jpg), the filename will e.g. be flash-red.gif

  • The result looks like this:

You can download and save these images with the right mouse button.

Convert the animated GIFs with a suitable program (e.g. Xilisoft 3GP Converter www.xilisoft.com/3gp-video-converter.html (not freeware; who knows good freeware for this?) into the respective mobile video format (*.3gp, *.rm etc.).

Copy the video clips to your mobile.

Set the video player to indefinite repetition.

Chose the appropriate clip (red or white) and play it on the full screen.

Ready!

When playing the clip the background lighting will remain on. My Nokia 6680 will blink for 2 hours and 17 minutes with a fully charged battery; that time is so long because half of it the screen is black.

Here you can download the ready-to-use clips for the above-mentioned Nokia (screen size 176 x 208); 2 K per file; click with right mouse button:

flash-white.3gp
flash-red.3gp

Maybe these files work with other screen sizes and/or mobiles, too. I have no way of testing this.

Have fun with walking, cycling or riding!
