Blocking access to the "Window" menu item without a plug-in in multi-file solutions in FileMaker Pro In many cases you will want to prevent users from switching directly between the files of a multi-file solution. Instead you want them to use only your buttons for navigation. There is an excellent plug-in 'SecureFM" that does such a job perfectly. If for whatever reason you do not want to use the plug-in, there is a workaround: Make a "forbidden layout" in each file. That layout is called every time a button sends the user to another file, i.e. first go to that forbidden layout and then call the other file. On the "forbidden layout" (I make it all "blood-red") there is only one button - "Menu" - which sends the user straight to the solution's main menu. Of course the status bar must be disabled on that layout. As soon as the user tries to access another file via the "Window" menu item, all he sees is a red screen with the menu button in the middle of it. He will learn rather quickly that it is useless to access the Window menu item. In the top left corner of each (forbidden) layout you should place a tiny invisible button that needs shift + alt to get activated in order to de-block the status bar. Otherwise you might lock up yourself on that "red page" and would not be able to redesign it. I admit that this workaround in a solution with many files means some additional programming, but it is foolproof and free. Good luck! Back to the list of my FileMaker Pro trouvailles |
